I have to choose Duck Soup as the most quotable film of the year but Dinner at 8 definitely gives it a run for its money. It's not fair. All three of those Busby Berkeley musicals are fantastic, as is Dinner at Eight. There are still some of those you mention here which I haven't seen, but hope to catch up with them soon. JudyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2535698675045986569.post-5891395635566490352014-01-15T16:14:08.638-08:002014-01-15T16:14:08.638-08:00I haven't read all the entries yet, but this i...I haven't read all the entries yet, but this is my favorite so far (and I don't mean that to reflect badly on the other entries, because they were great, too). You really captured the feeling of that era. I've heard of but haven't seen many of the films you mentioned. I can't wait to see them now. Dinner at 8 and Footlight Parade (and all the musicals really) look particularly fun.

I HAVE seen The Invisible Man and Duck Soup. The latter is one of my favorite films of all time (I even did a review for it last year, which can be found here: http://theartisticpackrat.wordpress.com/2013/02/28/i-totally-fing-love-this-movie-blogathon-the-invisible-man/#more-609). You are so right about its special effects. Even if you can see the literal strings in places, the effects are still mind blowing. I sometimes wonder if John P. Fulton gets the credit he deserves for all the great work he did. I love Duck Soup, as well. It used to be my favorite Marx Brothers' film, but now it's second best to A Night at the Opera.

Anyway, sorry for yacking so much. This just was such a good entry. Can't wait to watch some of the films you profiled. Keep up the great work.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2535698675045986569.post-84561653726059263592014-01-14T20:48:04.370-08:002014-01-14T20:48:04.370-08:00Thanks, Joe! So many great things after so much sadness and lost hope.
Also a fantastic year for cinema. What a great list! As we have the one film we look forward to seeing these days, I wonder if the audiences of 1933 had King Kong at the top of their must see list? Or perhaps they needed a good comedy and rushed to see Duck Soup.

A fun read!
